Have you ever imagined a world without a Nurse? No Nurse, No patient care. Nurses picks up the pieces where Doctor's fall apart. The bedside time I spend with my patient is never a slack because it is related to fewer errors and fast healing. Who are the essential people for monitoring patient condition if not Nurses? Self sacrifice as the road to nobility has never been easy for nurses; yet we don't talk about the cost of that self sacrifice.
The belief that nurses are nothing than additional asset for doctors is irrational. Some believe is an easier alternative to becoming a doctor; getting so obsessed in comparing one thing to another that they become ignorant to the fact that both(Doctors and Nurses) are not fighting for the same cause. We are not working against each other; we are working with each other and we rely on each other. Believe me, the entire argument is irrelevant because nursing is not only for the physically ill.
The impact we make on a patient's life is indelible no matter how brief it may be. I never aspired to be a nurse because I couldn't go to medical school, but rather because I choose it. I maintain patient's dignity, through intimate moments, heartbreaking situations and long term difficult situation. I share in the joy of newly born babies and miraculously cured diseases. I share in the heartbreaking of a life changed forever, a disease too powerful and the winding up of life. Nurses make a difference. I may not make the most money or receive the highest recognition, but I'll be making the biggest differences in the lives of patients. I know that every day, I will touch a life or a life will touch me.
I listen to patients, help them eat and drink, reassure them, touch them and assist them with bodily functions. The work and the flexibility suit me. I meet interesting people from all over the world and I learn something new every day. A disease treated stand a chance of improving or deteriorating but a person treated is guaranteed cure.
Nursing is an opportunity to journey with others in critical moments of their lives and realizing the self-fulfillment your contribution has made. It is not only a helping profession but also a giving profession.
Indeed, Nursing is the pulsating heart of human care, without which a great deal of lives would be lost.
