Which school to apply to in NYS?

Published

Hello,

I will start off with a little brief introduction, I've was home schooled for my high school education, I'm finishing up my last class in around 2 weeks. I decided I wanted to be a RN years ago, I have a 3.7/3.8 gpa. I've been researching various nursing programs available in my area, however I see some that are pre-nursing, which confuse me. I'm very interested in applying to this school http://www.stpaulsschoolofnursing.edu/enrollment.php they seem to have a very simple and straight forward admission procedure. It seems like you complete your studies and will get your associates degree. That being said I don't know of any other nursing schools in New York that have such a simple admissions process. I haven't taken any college entrance exams yet (SATS,ACTS, and such). Are there any schools that you know of where they just look at your diploma, transcript, gpa, and make a decision based on that? Instead of having to take these prerequisites? Sorry, if I seem utterly misinformed, my parents were planning on me going to a traditional college overseas but I opted for getting a degree in Nursing instead. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Welcome to allnurses! I found your thread interesting because this semester, one of my students was one who was home-schooled up until college. As far as I know, this was my first, so I was very intrigued by his transition to traditional school learning. He is doing quite well, by the way :)

I see that you are asking about schools that have an easy application process. I can't say for sure that the school you are interested has and easier process than others in the area. I am familiar with the school, as well as others in the area. What St. Paul's does offer, however, is more of a fast-track to your degree. You could conceivably get your degree in 2 years, since they offer a full-time track. You do not have to come in with any ore-requisites. do not be fooled though: this is NOT an easy task. You would be taking up to 5 classes at a time. these classes are very intense.

Regardless of your high school experience, my opinion is that going straight into nursing 101 put of high school is risky. There is no time to get used to the differences of college learning. And as someone who is transitioning from home-schooling to on-campus schooling, you might want to consider a school/program that makes you take pre-requisites, so you get a feel of what college life is like: teachers, other students, etc. I really have limited knowledge of how home schooling works, but my guess is its quite different. And, Nursing school is different than any other learning experience.

I would not put all of my eggs in one basket. You have a lot of options in the area. You may also want to consider the BSN programs in the area. You'll need to get the degree anyway.
