What does a RN need to prepare for working in a pediatric office/clinic to start out

Congatulations for rounding out your nursing experiences! Caring about children is not a lot different from caring for the elderly.. both ages require you talk to the patient ( when able) as well as the caregiver.

To get a good start, I would talk to the provider you are working with about the recommendations for fever control, vomiting, diarrhea measures. Also is there a "kid care" book that he recommends to moms?

Dear Kristen,

I did telephone triage in a 6 provider office for many years and my bible for triage was Barton Schmidtt M.D.(not sure if I spelled his name correctly)telephone protocols. The protocols are easy to follow and can and will guide you with the even the most difficult problems or questions. Also keep in mind to go with your gut. If you have a bad feeling about something you are probably right. Bring the child in to the office. You are making an assesment without seeing the child only what the parent or care giver tells you.
