What is the purpose of a Union for Nurses?

I live in Ontario Canada and my union is SEIU. Do they protect me somehow? Do I get malpractice insurance? Discounts? Protection from being easily fired, laid off, not being paid enough?

I want to get as much mal-practice insurance as I can get because I am hearing horror stories of Nurses being fired/sued for stuff they did not do, and its because its always the word of the patient against the Nurse's
