What is Post-ICU Rehab?

Hi All,

I am looking to find an entry-level job (PCT) at a hospital while waiting for nursing school. When I become a nurse I would like to work in ICU or CCU and get my CCRN.

A job has come up that is in the Post-ICU Rehab. So my questions are:

1. What exactly is Post-ICU Rehab

2. Will this give me good experience for ICU in the future (if not the experience, then maybe the exposure so transferring from one to the other would be easy).

Please advise! Thank you.

My hospital is a post-ICU rehab. We take patients directly from the ICU and admit them to our facility. My hospital is divided into cardiopulmonary (we take LVADs and transplant patients, run drips, etc), ventilator unit (trachs only, no intubations. we have respirators and trach collars), neurology, oncology, and two complex medical/tele floors. We even take post-trauma patients. Sometimes we get these patients because their acute insurance is up and other times we get them because they need intensive therapy, are too stable for the ICU but not stable enough for the floors. We are surrounded by every major Boston city hospital and usually get our admits from them but occasionally we'll get from community hospitals. It is so amazing to see a shell of a person roll in on an ambulance and then watch them walk to their car 3 weeks to one year later!

OctoberBride - thank you so much. I did some internet searches but not much comes up. I guess maybe a lot of people aren't familiar with this? I see that this message had over 90 views but only one reply!

Jenni, do a search from LTACs/rehab (longterm acute care). This acronym is often synonymous with a post-ICU rehab. They are called different things in different parts of the country.
