What kind of medication system do you have?

Nurses General Nursing

Hello,

I work in a LTC facility. We have a med system that I think is horrible. Each resident has their own box in the med cart. The pharmacy sends med bottles of all different sizes. Some small and some very big bottles, as well as pills in packages. Most of the residents are on multiple meds. So the bottles are crammed into their boxes. Some are so jammed pack that it's hard to even open the box. When doing a med pass, you have to go through each bottle to get to the one you need. Very time consuming. Also the labels are so faded, making it very hard to read. I complained and the pharmacist said it is because of the label machine they have and they will not get another one. Basically saying too bad--the labels are going to remain faded. I talked to the supervisor about the med system and he said it won't be changed. No money to get an unit dose / bubble pack system. It takes forever to do the meds and with only one nurse (for 25 residents) there is hardly any time left to do treatments, orders, notes ect. Plus with this system, med errors are more likely to occur. I'm so fed up. The whole shift is taken up doing meds. Does anyone else work where they have the same type of med system?
