Hi All, This is my first post but have been reading all the threads available on this site for more than 5 years. My husband and I are getting ready to travel and I will be working as an RN. What do you all suggest for insurance in between assignments? I don't want to have to work continually just to keep insurance. Thanks for the input and support. I will take all of the suggestions you all have. There is nothing like experience, which I don't have in travel right now. Thanks to all.

What insurance are you using now? You might do better to have your own private policy. Some companies dont even have Insurance and others charge an arm & leg. Of course you could always do Cobra after an assignment but that too gets expensive.

I know the new regulations are supposed to make it easier for those with "pre existing conditions" able to obtain health insurance but I don't have personal experience in this. In the early days of travel I did the 13 week "short term" policies for around $100, don't think they exist any more. Went bare for a while and then I was with the same company for 7+ years and didn't take time off that would be over the amount allowed by the company. Of course I had an accident just after I quit travel nursing and before the new insurance took effect. Was able to Cobra the old policy (after the fact) and it paid for the injury. (may have been the same expense if I'd just paid the Doc, but you never know.) Since returning I have decided to get my own BC/BS policy. It's an automatic bank deduction so I don't have to worry about it. Haven't had to use it but am now at the age that if something happens it will most likely be big. Also the days of "professional courtesy" are over.

Thanks for the input! I am employed right now and have my employer insurance. I have looked at Cobra w/them and wow is it expensive. Are there companies you might be able to suggest that have insurance less than say, $300/mo? We will start our travel in October and will be supplying our own residence. Is there a base pay stipend for housing/meals/incidentals? I have looked at gsa.com. That was helpful, but I don't think I will get full reimbursement as listed. I would love to talk w/any of you w/experience to try to get things more settled. Please PM me, and we can connect. I am so excited about getting going, but uncertain also. Thanks for you guy's support. No eating our young/inexperienced here...
Post your questions here and I will respond. I don't Mindy pm's but then its not available for anyone else.
