What should I do first

Published

My fiance and I unemployed and I am underemployed. I am planning to start the ABSN program this fall. The absn program I am attending discourages me to work during the program. Should I start a family first and postpone school until I saved enough money?

Well, first things first. DO NOT HAVE CHILDREN. Humans are an invasive species by every definition, we do not need more help destroying the planet. My feeling that if you did "start a family" you will be less likely to pursue nursing school. Children are a huge financial commitment. Neither you nor your fiance should feel pressured by society to have children merely because that's what it thinks people should do. Enjoy more freedom without children!

What is your current health care designation / occupation? Perhaps you could save money before you start school? I concur with your perspective ABSN program. Working would be detrimental to your performance and well-being in the program.

Nursing school is extremely intensive, that is why you are discouraged from working during the program. With that said, it's not impossible. I've done it and so have others who've posted on the topic. I was in your situation, I needed a way to improve my financial standing and among the list of career choices that would get there in a relatively quick time and investment, I opted for nursing. You can also look into radiology tech programs...Ultrasound techs make quite good money.

I think most programs discouraging you from working, but the reality is not everyone can attend school without a concurrent source of income. I worked full time through my ADN program and it was doable, thanks to a pretty flexible workplace environment, and family.

A.M. Wolf- pretty harsh advice on the family plans. It's not that I don't care about the planet, but I wouldn't exchange my kids for anything. We may be leaving a larger carbon footprint, but we're also doing our best to raise kids that understand the importance of giving back to others.

Unemployed and underemployed means no kids , nursing school or not

I went to nursing school full time while working full time as a single mother. If you are already unemployed/underemployed, now is not the time to try to take on children and nursing school. Pick on thing and decide what it is you really want. If you want to work and go to nursing school, it can be done. You will have to prioritize your time. That may mean fewer times out with friends so you can study, but it's temporary.

Should I start a family first and postpone school until I saved enough money?

If you don't have enough money saved for school, do not, do not have children yet. Children are far more expensive than school.

I know ABSN is more rigorous than BSN, but almost all of my BSN classmates work. Many of them live with family but many of them do not. Our program discourages working above 20 hours/week but I know many classmates that do. Point is, it can be done.

You need money to start a family.

If you're underemployed and your fiance is unemployed, why is starting a family even a consideration at this point?

Please, tell me this is a troll post... nobody REALLY thinks this is a good idea, right???

I'm not sure on your ages, I'm 30 and waiting until at least I graduate at 31 to have kids and we are financially stable. I would never put kids through financial hardships, that's why I've waited until my 30s.

I went through nursing school with a small child and worked full time. It can be done but you need to realize up front how difficult and the sacrifices that come with whatever decision you choose. You have to weigh all your options ( pros and cons ) and make the best choice for you, your family and your goals.

I ain't gonna lie, if I could have not worked while in nursing school, I would have. But as mentioned, I needed the cash to pay for school so...........
