What to Do in the Meantime

Published

Hello everyone,

I have already completed a Bachelor of Science in Sociology. The number of careers and opportunities I have with this study are numerous, however, my heart feels no fervor nor excitement for any of them in the long-term other than nursing.

I am currently waiting for admission decisions from Texas A&M Health Science Center and University of Texas Health Science Center. However, I like to prepare for the worst case scenarios, which I believe is a smart, but stressful as well. I believe I have a fair shot at both aforementioned schools, yet I refuse to put my future solely in the hands of others, so I am actively trying to create myself opportunities to become a nurse as soon as I possibly can without compromising quality.

With that said, what do you all think might be the best thing for me to do? I have consider some options, but I might be missing other alternative possibilities so please do not hesitate to suggest them to me!

If it helps you all in giving my advices, here is some of my demographics:

----------

Male

Overall GPA of 3.7 in undergraduate major

Overall GPA of 4.0 in prerequisites for nursing schools (I have completed all prerequisites for the majority of BSN schools within Texas)

Scored a 94 and an 86, respectively, on the HESI and TEAS exams.

Volunteer experience at a hospital

There is currently no financial strain or pressure compelling me to find immediate work, but I would like to continue saving up for nursing school and/or future emergencies.

If I do not get accepted into either TAMHSC or UTHSC:

I will apply to the traditional two-year BSN track at TAMHSC, apply for the next semester of the pacesetter program at UTHSC, and apply for the accelerated-track at UTSAHSC and at UTMB HSC. The question is, should I also apply to colleges that offer ADN programs, and potentially go through the ADN-BSN route? I do not think I would need to take this route, but if I must then I will. Are there any other factors or alternatives I am not considering?

Also, in the event that I do not get accepted into either schools, how can I best use my time if my goal is to eventually become a nurse practioner?

1) Go get certified as a CNA or PCT, and hopefully find work and gain experience somewhere while I wait for future nursing decisions. I am strongly considering the CNA option, since it will not take longer than six weeks to complete. The cost of the program, however, will be around $800 for me.

2) Make or find opportunities that will provide me with contractual work/seasonal jobs

3) Build a career in areas not related to nursing, although I will essentially be risking career suicide when I go for nursing (whenever that will be).

I will continue volunteering in health-care related places to continue building friendships and bonds with the people I most likely will work with in the future. I also forgot to add: I will find out about nursing decisions for TAMHSC in about two weeks according to an advisor there, and no later than November 15 according to some stats posted on this website. Some of you might slap me for stressing myself out until I find out about admission decisions, but I want to have solid back-up plans assuming all else is equal.

As a sociologist, I understand and appreciate the different backgrounds, beliefs, experiences, and whatnot that make each individual's perspective unique and worthy of consideration. I am thankful for any and all advice.
