What barriers have the AMA or other Physicians groups raised that make it so tough...

for foreign trained physicians to become licensed in the United States as M.D.'s . There is a thread below about foreign trained physicians wanting to become nurses, because they can not obtain licenses as doctors in the United States. I add to that my own experience of a good friend from Sweden who went to one of their top Universities (Ben Gurion) and had practiced medicine there for over five years. When he came to the United States he was told that it would be virtually impossible to obtain a license in this country, no matter what tests that he might take. He ended up going into medical research for a local pharmaceutical company, and was responsible for discovering one of their leading drugs. Unfortunately, we've lost contact and I never had an indepth conversation as to exactly WHAT the requirements were that prevented his becoming a doctor or how far these rules went.

Are there lessons that American nurses could learn from physican organizations in terms of protecting their turf from foreign competition?
