What would you ask during an interview

Published

I am due to graduate in May and I wanted to know what you asked or wished you had asked during your interviews.

Thanks!

Jill

things to ask:

1.Nurse to pt ratio max........whats the max amt of patients you can care for on this unit...if its a m/s unit and the nurse pt ratio is higher than 1:5 it is nearly impossible to do your job well.....or safely.

2.when can I expect a raise

3.do you grant vacation time to employees who ask for time off when requested for on nonholiday timeframes(are they never going to grant you a vacation?)

4.Ask the NM to name the traits of her best nurse on her unit...it will give you insight

5.do you have nurse assistants?if so how many will be on my shift and what duties can they assist me with(like on my unit the nurse assistants draw our labs)so you may be suprised at the amt of stuff they can help you with

5.if nurses call in ...and we dont have enough staff.......do you close beds on this unit?if they say no...be worried this may mean you may be ssaddled with 7-9 pts on a m/s floor.......which is dangerous to your liscensure.

6.think in cya terms..........do NOT work at a facility that does not close beds....because when something happens....it is always the nurses fault until proven otherwise.

good luck!and choose carefully......job oppourtunities for nurses are plentiful!so even though you are a new grad you CAN choose!

I like to ask for a peer interview. I like talking with a few of the nurses on the floor without the NM in the room. I ask all kinds of questions regarding the working conditions on their floor. I also ask how they like working for their nurse manager. Pay close attention to initial body language when asking particular questions. Although, I have found most nurses will be truthful about this information.
