So, due to failing the first tier, again, the college here is longer availabe to me. UGH! Trying my best to regroup and I have began to question whether or not I am suppose to be a nurse. Currently I work at a hospital and I love it but maybe the nurse calling just isnt for me. Other options include two other colleges about an hour an half away, but being a single mother may make things a little complicated. Also some coworkers have mentioned the online college program, Excelsior. I don't know to much about this program. Can someone give me some insight? Not sure if I even qualify.

Excelsior is always an option, however basically what they do is offer you a list of "stuff" you need to know and then you pay to take an exam on that. From what I read on their website their is no real counseling or one-on-one education. For some people that's exactly what they need, others need a more classroom teaching approach. I'm also having a hard time finding out what the total cost of the AAS program is... Just registering costs $920, then you pay $290/credit and between $200-$300 per exam. The exception is the Clinical Performance Exam which will cost you $1850.

So if I do the math right that would be...

64 credits x $290 = $18560

16 exams x $235 (appr.) = $3760

One time registration fee = $920

Clinical Exam = $1850

TOTAL = $25090

Considering the fact that is it a private school, that is not too bad actually. EBSN for example charges around $20000 as well.

There's another online program called Chamberlain. They actually even have an on-site campus in Phoenix and offer a program approved by the AZBN. Their ADN program can be finished in 3 semesters and will cost you around $21000. Their admission criteria are limited to ACT testing or 25 college classes with a GPA of 2.75 or higher.

As of last month Chamberlain's ASN program is shut down by the Missouri BON effective June 2008. Those of us in the program graduate after that date are getting very little guidence from the school or anyone else. The school is encouraging students to continue taking nursing and gen ed classes through them with no promise the classes will be worth anything when it is all said and done. And all the schools in the area are indicating they will not accept the nursing classes taken at chamberlain.
