Waitlisted for UNC Chapel Hill Summer BSN program for 2013

Published

Hi All,

I just applied and was Waitlisted for UNC Chapel Hill Summer BSN program for 2013. I feel so upset although not discourage. Is there anyone out there in the same situation? or does anyone know the chances of being taken off the waitlist or reapplying and getting accepted??? I had so many friends, family members, co workers hoping and praying for me and I even got a few UNC nurses and various people to look my essays. I had like 5 different rough drafts, volunteer experience and even spoke about a life changing experience that made me want a career in nursing.Any feedback would be greatly greatly appreciated. I put so much effort into my application and I just want to be accepted:cry:

Hi destined4greatness. Thank you for starting this thread. I am also in the same position and have read online where a few people were accepted off the waitlist in previous cycles. I am not sure how often or how many students get accepted off the waitlist, but I hope there will be open spots for us for this summer! I called the SON and I was told that individuals who were wait listed could get a decision as late as May 14th. I am happy I didn't get denied admission but a little sad that it's not an acceptance yet. It sounds like you put in a lot of hard work and time into your application. Don't get discouraged, I keep telling myself that everyday. I wish you the best of luck and I hope we get good news soon!

Do not let being waitlisted discourage you from being a UNC nurse. I was waitlisted the first time I applied to the school as an undergraduate at UNC. I had no idea how hard it was to get into nursing school and assumed because I met at least the minimum requirements and was a UNC student I would get in (no one I knew was applying so I was not very informed). I'm not going to lie, when I found out I was waitlisted I cried because I felt I had planned my future around getting in. But I got over it and tried to improve my application for next time. I applied a second time for Summer 2013 and was accepted.

Call the Nursing School and have them review your application with you, they can tell you helpful things to work on for the next time you apply. The school likes to see that you are determined to be a nurse and are not willing to give up.

Is your overall gpa at least in the middle range of a 3? if not take some classes to boost this

Do you have prereq science classes that are a B- or less? if you do, retake them

Do you have CNA or EMT experience? I had my CNA license but no experience the first time I applied and they said it would be a good idea to get some experience

Do you have consistent volunteer experience? They like to see consistent and involved volunteer experience, I had lots of organizations I was volunteering with but it was inconsistent and hours were spread thin between the multiple organizations, so I decided to choose one organization and became heavily involved with just that one

There is no formula or point system so its hard to know what makes them think you are a good applicant, but these are things they told me to work on

For my second application I mentioned in my essays everything I did to improve my application and how being waitlisted affect my life and what I learned from it.

I hope this was helpful and I hope you get off that waitlist and join the summer 2013 class! Good luck!

O wow. thank you both for replying to my thread. So thankful. Thanks also for the positive words. i was so upset for like three hours but then my family made me feel better about it. I called UNC as soon as I saw it and they stated that they are starting a list for people to speak to an advisor, so I am interested in seeing what caused all of this. I do have to say like you guys I am very HAPPY i at least got accepted and not denied. I think that would have put me one step back. As far as my application... I know I had a great essay I had a few nurses at UNC read it and even used other resources. I even went as far as talking about my home care experience with my grandparents and all that we have been through (heart wrenching) I am a second degree student and when I graduated in 2009 my gpa was a 3.2. which was not very high but I was working trying to support myself and just survive. My science gpa is a 4.0 which I am so proud of. As far as volunteer experience... as an undergrad it was sporadic. But for the past two years I have been a volunteer at UNC.I think that maybe considering getting my CNA license is a really really good idea. When I talk to UNC I will definitely let you guys know what happens. Thanks again luvmydogNC & jv123... Hope I get to see you guys eventually
