Very first nursing exam....done and over with!!

We start clinicals on next Thursday. I'm very anxious about it. But I'm hoping its not as bad as I think it may be.

On my first fundamentals test I studied so much I made myself sick. I woke up on test day with a splitting headache.:chuckle

On Monday I had my very first nursing exam (I'm in the fundamentals). It was challenging but not too bad. I think I did pretty good. I know I over studied a bit. On Sunday I studied from the time I woke up to the time I went to bed so yeah I overstudied, hopefully that didn't affect me too much. I feel alot better now though knowing what the tests are like and having an idea of how to study for them. I was an absolute nervous wreck before this exam. The next one hopefully I'll be a little less stressed. I start clinicals on March 3rd, which also happens to be my 20th birthday!! I'm really nervous about clinicals! We start on a med/surg unit. I have NO idea what to expect. I've never worked in a health care setting and have no experience in that area at all. So I'm nervous. What was your first clinical like?? I would like to hear some stories. Anyway, I'll hopefully get my grade back on Monday. I'll let you all know how I did.

congrats on making it through your first test! I am a junior in a 4 year BSN program (semester 6) and it is extremely beneficial to oversudy. Trust me, its better than understudying. The teacher will always put the one thing on the test you didnt study....lol, its happened to me! My first day of clinicals was last semester I was SO nervous, I had never worked in a hospital before but this semester my confidence is better so I do a better job in clinicals.....my best advice is to be prepared.....know your meds, injection sites, procedures, etc. Try to take deep breaths......but you will feel nervous the first time but it will get better.....I still get nervous every time I go but I feel more confident!

My first med-surg clinical was really an eye opener. I had a 97 y/o who ultimately died during the night after my first clinical. She was cheyne-stoking and her extremeties were cooling down during my shift with her. Now, my "experience" didn't allow me to know she was getting ready to die, but my instructor certainly made sure I knew it and pointed out all the impending death signs she was exhibiting. It was a learning experience to say the least. It was a sad first experience, but also a learning one that I felt fortunate to get. Some students never had a patient near death to get to witness some of the things that happen when a person is nearing death.
