VENTING !

Published

this is just a vent.....first off,I work in a 12 person house, the people are MR and very medically frail, nonw of them eat by mouth, all have j-g tubes..some both (for drainage),2 have trachs, and ALL are wheelchaired bound...this is a medical home...we now have a new guy who is more psych then MR...he is in a wheel chair but can get around by himself,he also eats by mouth...his medical records say he has a 4th grade level...he is manipulative..if he doesnt get his way he will start yelling swearing and sayin he has rights he know his rights and i am going to get you off on administrative leave......when he swear he swears....he calls you every name in the book! he throws things,he hits and spits..he is just awful...my vent is...HE DOESNT BELONG.....our other 11 people are NOT getting the care and attention they need since he has been here...he refuses meds...and when he does that you have to call the doc, which is a pain cause it puts you behind.....med err have gone up(for eveyone) since he has been there.....people are bidding out of our house to other houses, people are quiting....cant get per diems to come to house either.....when we are short the pull from other houses and these people are NOT happy about it...they pull cause no one answers their phone to come in....me included!....i really hate it there...i use to love it....i chose this house cause it is so medically involved....we have complained to deaf ears...i would love to see the office RNs come work the floor! ..office RNs...they are another joke.....all LPNs work the floor...we have no aides,so we do it all.....adls,treatments,meds,their wash etc....the RNs are suppose to make sure the med cupboard is well stocked..well it isnt...we are always running out of meds...there are some of us who will actually order when we see the stock getting low....BUT we shouldnt have to,esp when the RN tells us that it her job....WELL DO IT!!

when we see a change in status on a resident..we will tell the RN...half of the time she doesnt even go check...for example...one resident had a rash starting on her back...we chart on it,we tell the RN...we did this for ONE week...it kept getting worse.....one saturday when i worked(i was on meds)...went in to give her meds...her resp were 56,temp of 102,pulse 150....she wasnt this bad for midnights but took a turn just around shift change....so i called 911 and had her shipped out....she had sepsis! and this was going on for a WEEK!! granted her vitals were w/in normal ranges at that time...but the RN did nothing!!!!.....

this is a state job which pays good and has awsome benefits.....others who have started at this house get out as fast as they come....the only reason i stay is cause i love the residents and plus we have one weekend off a month..others houses dont do that......i think it is time for a change tho....

does anyone work for public health? I think i am going to apply as there is one lpn opening...is it alot of travel?what do you do?

thanks for reading,i know this was long
