VCU's Critical Care certificate

Published

I was looking at VCU's School of Nursing Site and saw that they have a program that offers a pre-bachelors certificate in Critical Care. It's a few classes in critical care designed for an RN (preferably with a year experience) and it recommends it for anyone who works in critical care and wants to know/understand more and also for people applying to CRNA school.

My question is this: I'll be graduating with my ADN and then possibly relocating to Richmond and working with the hope of going to CRNA school (anywhere, but VCU would be in my top 5) someday. I have a BA in history and could finish a BS in Biology fairly easily. Would it be better to get a BSN or would finishing my BS in Bio be ok? Also, I've already had MOST of the stuff that is applicable to healthcare (the stuff I need to finish the BS is ecology and plant stuff, I've had Cell Bio, Genetics, O-Chem, Physics etc.), so would that stuff plus this CC certificate be a good idea?

Overall, do I need to actually do the BSN? Regardless of that, anyone know about the CC program? Is it worth it?

Hi BB,

I am currently a student in the VCU CRNA program. I am not positive but, I heard this program is going to start accepting only students who have a BSN. I have also heard this about several other schools.

I would suggest contacting Dr. Hartland, our director of education, and speaking with him. All of our faculty and staff are helpful and generous with their time.

Best to you!

Oh, and about the CCC, I doubt this will mean a whole lot, (may not be worth the money). I would suggest obtaining your CCRN, if you do not already have it. They were very pleased I had this on my CV.

Receiving a national exam certification says alot about a prospective student.
