VCU Traditional BSN 2014 Applicants

Published

I'm sending in my application to VCU's Nursing school this week for the Traditional Program for Fall 2014 entry. I have been wanting to attend VCU nursing school since I was a freshman. I was wondering if anyone could give some feedback as to personal experiences and qualifications you had when you applied to VCU Nursing School. I'm so nervous!!! I am a pre-nursing student at VCU. I came into VCU with 21 Dual Enrollment Credits at a community college with a 3.7 GPA, by the end of this fall semester I will have a 3.4. I have a 1050 Math and Reading Combined SAT and an ACT of 22. I am a certified nurses assistant and have been working with post op and end of life patients for over a year now. I have volunteered in a hospital ICU and ER; a mental health facility and I was President of a 4-H Club for about 5 years (included a lot of community service projects). I guess I am just wondering if I even have a good shot at being admitted. I just don't want to be heart broken if I receive a wait list or rejection notification. Regardless of attending VCU I will most definitely get my RN somewhere, some how.

I currently attend VCU and applied to the accelerated nursing program from summer 2014, so I'm waiting to hear back from them in February. I don't know what VCU cares about most in applicants so I can only tell you my opinion based on stats I've heard. Academic wise, you aren't competitive because the average tradition nursing student has a 3.7-3.8 GPA and a 1200 something combined reading and math SAT score (I'm not sure about the ACT, but I know the minimum score accepted is a 19). What are your grades in anatomy and physiology? (I'm going to assume you're in my anatomy class because I'm taking it right now) Experience wise, I think you're in very good standing and will definitely stand out in that regard (you have more experience than me by a landslide). Also, you probably already know that there are over 500 applicants and they pick 60 of you, so that should give you a good idea about just how competitive you need to be.

I'm sorry if anything I said was harsh. :( I just wanted to be as honest as possible for your benefit. :)

No not harsh at all just a realistic evaluation  I have heard similar things. I have also heard it just depends on the applicants who are applying and your comparison to one another. I am not in anatomy yet, I am taking it this spring. I have completed all other prereqs except for anatomy and nutrition. However, I believe I will do pretty well in anatomy because I took AP Anatomy and Physiology in high school and held a grade of A+ the entire class. I realize college anatomy is alot more detailed but I figure at least I have a pretty decent background and Anatomy is my favorite subject. I guess we will see how it goes in comparison to other people applying. I guess I wont know for sure until I get an answer back, I was just wondering if anyone else has applied with similar academic standing and was accepted. Thank you for your feedback though, and good luck :)!

P.S forgot to mention that the semester gpa of 3.4 is unweighted.

Also my cumulative after this semester will be a 3.6

Did you or anyone hear back?!
