Hey guys, after reading through some of the 2010 hopefuls thread, I thought I'd make a thread for those of us looking towards 2011 with questions/concerns:
I'm looking to start taking care of my prereqs like right now, but it's kinda hard to find out what exactly will count at SAC. I mean the phys&anat and the chem classes have direct conversions, but I can't really find the others, wondering if anyone here who took their prereqs at SAC could point me in the right direction for the science and statistics prereqs at SAC.
Also, I thought I'd see what you guys thought of my chances -
I graduated May 2009 with a BA in History from a private university in Boston (Suffolk University) and I've been working in a small law firm that specializes in taxation. Very quickly, I realized that I NEED to do something (1) outside of an office (2) that lets me move around and most importantly (3) is meaningful. I want to have a positive and tangible impact on the world. And so I've been thinking a lot about nursing, and after researching it for a while, I'm really set on UTHSCSA's accelerated BSN program.
I graduated with a 4.0 GPA in 3 years and completed a senior honors thesis. I plan to start volunteering at a local hospital in the next month or so and continue doing so until nursing school. I will also probably get CPR certified next month via the RedCross.
Anyhow, I suppose I have a couple other questions -
About the TEAS - would you say that your prereqs prepared you for the science portion? While I remember a great deal from my high school years - some chemistry and biology, specifically (I looked at a practice test online), I know I am not prepared for the material at the moment. So - again, would you guys say the prereqs prepared you for that or did you get some sort of study books, and if the latter, then what did you use?
And right now, I need the following prereqs:
Anat & Phys - 8 credits
Microbiology - 4
Chemistry w/ labs - 8
Nutrition - 3
Growth & Development - 3
Statistics - 3
for a total of 29 credits....I wonder if it's possible to do those partime between now and enrollment - anyone else do something similar under similar time constraints? Or should I enroll in a prenursing degree to get rid of those while fulltime, then go for the nursing school?
Any guidance is really appreciated! Thanks!

Hey Pathei_Mathos. I'm also looking to apply for the second degree BSN at UT. I will be starting my pre-reqs tomorrow for flex II at SAC. I know the Statistics course has to be a math statistics because I am having to take this over, as my psychology statistics from my previous degree will not count. I haven't signed up for any of the science courses yet, but it's just the basic microbiology and nutrition courses that you need.
When I talked to an advisor at UTHSCSA he told me that they will only look at your cumulative GPA for the pre-reqs and not your previous degree, and that around a 3.5 would be competitive.
I am concerened about the science on the TEAS as well, and am hoping that some of the science courses will help with that section. From what I have heard it's kind of hard to study for the science section because it's so random, but you can get the ATI study guide to help you study for the test.
I have a total of 37 pre-reqs and need to go full-time to get done before the program starts. If you need to work, I'm sure you could get the pre-reqs done before the deadline- You don't need to have them completed before you apply I think you just need a total of 60 credit hours or something before you can apply.
Anyway, I hope this helps a bit. Feel free to ask me more questions if you have any!

Hello, I am a recent graduate of the UTHSCSA SON, Class of 2009!
In regards to the TEAS test, I bought a book that went over things that would be on the test. The science courses in college is harder than the science part in the TEAS test. I had to go back to hs days and remember the simple things, but definitely had to jog my memory or I would have never done well.

Hi,
Well I just got accepted to UTHSCSA Fall 2010...I ordered the TEAS study guide from the makers of the TEAS test and it helped a lot!! As far as the science portion, study up on geology as well...yes geology!!! My GPA was a 3.85 cummulative and a 3.5 for the prereqs and scored an 81 on the TEAS test. I have had previous experience in the medical field though....I know how the application process can be:idea:so I hope this helps....

If you have not had science in a while, I wouldn't take more than two sciences classes at a time, escecially if you work too. Remember, they will incude class plus labs, so the work and studying will be plentiful. Nutrition and Growth & Dev are easy classes. You may want to pair one of those classes with the more difficult science courses. The acceptance criteria has changed since I graduated. It was based soley on GPA; mine was over 3.5. Also, try to get a study group together. They can be helpful and supportive. I would not have made it through nursing school without the help of my study group.:)
