URGENT No specific reason why I want to be a nurse...

Published

I have no EXACT reason why I want to be a nurse.

I don't have a touching or heartwarming encounter with a nurse that inspired me.

I just want to help people...just like everyone else in the entire world.

I've always been healthy and never been to a hospital sadly.

So, I don't know what to write for my college essay........

I'm applying because I don't believe in coincidences and everything that has happened to me right now...led me to nursing. But, I probably can't write that in my essay.

Please don't..berate me..I'm just frustrated T-T and would like any advice or help.

I hope I'm not the only one.

Not everyone has the same story, which is what makes the decision to pursue nursing such an amazing thing! I think your statement, "I just want to help people..." is a wonderful start! Just sit down and elaborate on that statement. Why do you want to help people? Have you ever had an encounter with someone that made you want to help them? Associate that with your desire to help people in a nursing setting. Have you ever had a sick family member and seen a nurse in action (good or bad)? Elaborate on any of those things and if it's just a simple desire to help people, there are a billion ways you can dig into that! :)

I actually did not want to include my previous hospital stays in my essay because I didn't want them to think I was too "sickly" to be a nurse. I have Crohn's disease, and that has been a big part of why I want to become a nurse, but I didn't even mention I have it because of fear they won't pick me. (I am healthy aside from that and it does not prevent me from working.) I'm assuming you have been around a nurse at some point in your life. If someone you knew was having a baby, sick, or what have you. I would try to remember those experiences. You can also include that it's just something that you know. "I feel very strongly about pursuing my career as a nurse, because it has always been something I just knew I wanted to do. It's something that I feel in my heart is the right path for me." You could imply that you feel this to be your calling in life. Also, I don't know what they tell you to put on your essay, but the school i'm applying for wanted us to list reasons why we wanted to go to their college along with why we wanted to become a nurse. So you could also use a paragraph on buttering them up. ;) Good luck!

I'm the same way - I don't have a touching story or anything like that. I only just thought about nursing in the last 2 years. I've worked as a childbirth educator and labor doula, and that is what led me to think about nursing. I think you probably have something that led you to think about nursing, and i would just use that and talk about what qualities you have that will make YOU an excellent nurse :) We don't all have to have a feel good gushy reason to do what we do, but we all have some qualities that will make us awesome at it. Good luck!!
