UPMC approved national certification preferred?

U.S.A. Pennsylvania

Hello everyone,

I am in my 4th year and final year of a BSN program in PA. I have started preliminary searches for possible job openings in the area. I have a question. When I search the job openings on the UPMC website, many of the basic qualifications list "UPMC approved national certification preferred." Does anyone know what this means? I will have my BSN and take the NCLEX upon graduation. Is the passing of the NCLEX what this is referring to? Sorry to sound stupid.

Hi! they are referring to any number of national professional nursing specialty certifications such as a CCRN which is a critical care certification (not a skills certification such as ACLS). Nursing licensure indicates that a nurse has enough entry level knowledge to begin nursing. Specialty certification demonstrates that a nurse has continued to learn beyond entry level and has mastered a body of specialized knowledge. That means they are up-to-date on patient safety issues and evidenced-based practice in their specialties.

Thank you SO much for the response. I have searched online specialty certifications since I read your response, and I understand now.

I appreciate you taking the time to answer my question. Take care:)
