Hello all,

I wanted to start a topic about the University of Alabama dual DNP (FNP/pmhnp) program as I have not seen much information on it.

I have sent in my application for Spring 2025, if you are also applying please reach out and share your experience. If you have graduated from this program or another DNP specialty from UA please feel free to share some insight.

For reference:

I sent in my application on 3/14

I had 2 letters of recommendation sent in by 3/21

the third letter was sent in 3/31

Has anyone had any experience with the timelines for a decision?

I emailed them for a current list of partnered clinical sites in Florida so I can see if I have to relocate closer to where the concentration is high — location wise. Maybe you can ask for a list too in Carolina area.

Wow! Thank you for sharing this information. Please keep me updated on your journey.

I was able to get a list of contacts in NC. Thank you for that suggestion. Question, how and when do you think you'd reach out to try and setup clinicals?

also, have you done your interview?

Yes, I finished my interview this morning. It was really weird. My questions were something like, "If you become a government official, what would change that would impact healthcare in general?" "What did you find in the University of Alabama that motivated you to apply to our program?" "What can you contribute as a future professional to destigmatize mental health issues or to shift the mindset of the people regarding mental health?" "What attribute is essential to help you succeed in the DNP program?" Then, the writing portion was about ethical issues. LOL...super random, right?

Do you remember what your questions were like?

and yes, I got the lists, too. It was very helpful.

Nice! Congratulations for completing the interview. Now we both wait on the decision.

My question (that I remember) were:

What strategies do you have for time management?

what is my favorite animal and why?

written - if you did not know how to complete research, how would you go about it?

Have you received any feedback from your application?

I met someone who graduated from UA last semester. She did the DNP dual specialization and I was able to gather some information from her about the program. Have you applied to other schools or just UA?

Hello! That's awesome did she have good reviews about the schooling?

I have received no feedback or any additional notifications. Have you?

I started my application for Duke but it's a masters and I wanted a dual DNP. They have an excellent program, but I'm more inclined to UA.

It took her 5 years to finish the program because of clinical delays. Even though UA has partnered sites she told me that it's not guaranteed that they're free and willing to take her. So she had issues finding clinical sites which caused multiple delays. She told me that it's hard if the school does not guarantee your clinical placement. Other schools take care of that for the students but not for UA unfortunately.

I found two other schools that offer dual specializations, so if I ended up not getting in UA I'll proceed with the other schools.

That was my only concern really the placements. But I'll try to take a look at the resources they sent and go from there. If you work for a hospital I recommend starting that conversation with coordinators. I started the Duke application but the cost is holding me back (110k+ for one specialty masters). May I know the other two schools you will apply to?

What I really like about UA is that you are awarded masters on the way to the DNP (many schools don't offer that). That was important to me to be able to walk away with something midway. I haven not heard it being difficult to transfer if need be.

I wonder if there's an alternative way to communicate? I don't see direct message capabilities on here.

Or what works best for you?

She told me that even if you do reach out in advance there's no guarantee that when the time comes that you need the clinical placement they'll be able to accommodate you. That's what she told me according to her experience.

I'm familiar with Duke and I know  that they're very expensive. I found other schools that offer MSN dual and also DNP dual specializations.
