Univ. of Miami

Published

My daughter is considering the one year accelerated program for her RN at Univ. of Miami. Starts in May and goes for 3 straight semesters.

Concerned about the schools probation status and the overall quailty of the program especially considering the cost.

Any help would be appreciated.

I was accepted to the accelerated program and will be attending starting this May. I was also concerned about the probation thing. I called Florida Board of Nursing multiple times until I was satisfied that the people I was talking to knew what they were talking about. I called several different times and talked to diff. people incase I was talking to someone not sufficiently in the know. If I was you I would call FBON and ask to talk to someone about it. They consistently told me that UM is working very hard on the problem and that they are working very closely with FBON to rectify the situation. I was told that there was basically zero chance of a suspension and that I would be very safe in attending UM. It makes sense, they are a huge school with tons of clout and unless they basically said Fyou to the FBON and acted unresponsible and refused to work with them, I doubt they would get shut down.

As far as quality, I know they have the fancy sim labs and clinicals for nursing students are done at the best hospitals in miami but they have had some problems with people passing the NCLEX. I think they were at 75% for first time pass rates and thats what got them in trouble. They have since implimented HESI testing and other testing things that helps to train the students to better take the NCLEX. I was looking at their pass rates since the probation and they were up in the mid 80% and better. So they seem to have gotten their stuff together.

Im really not to worried about being a guiney pig here, even though I was very worried before I researched it throughly for myself.

Yes, the "UM thing" has all of the nursing schools in Miami shaken up. There are rumors abound as to what is going on. I am presently attending nursing school at Miami Dade College. We have a couple of students that came over from UM. There isn't much in the way of details as to what happened over there, but what I have heard was that the GPA's were high, while NCLEX pass rates were low. Which raised allegations as to cheating on exams...etc.

I do know that in the clinical sites, MDC students are chased by the nurse recruiters. I have more than one heard them mention that they would rather higher an MDC grad than a UM grad. Mainly based upon the NCLEX pass rate.

Of course UM is the 1000 pound gorilla sitting in the corner. Not much is said BAD about them other than little comments. More of the impressions that have been shared by the recruiters, and of course none of them are going to overtly say something bad about UM.

I am sure you are safe going to school there. The school isn't going to be pulled out from underneath you. The only negative from the "UM thing" that you might find is that you might have to prove yourself. From what it sounds, the UM emblem on your diploma does not carry the same reputation it once held.

Anyways, good luck.
