Hi everyone. I am looking for anyone working in the Wilmington area, perhaps at New Hanover, Brunswick Community Hospital or Dosher Memorial or anyone who is attending UNCW's Masters program to become a Family Nurse Practitioner.
I am in the NY area working on my ADN as a second degree (I have my Bachelor's in business from my "first life" in Human Resources) so any information about the UNCW program is much appreciated. My husband and I are looking to relocate from NY to NC so I can continue school and to be closer to family.
I am also wondering what the "real" salaries are out there in the Wilmington area. You can only find so much info online that is accurate. For example if you go on Salary.com and look up the RN salary for NY (Long Island), it's accurate, but from what I'm hearing that's not the case for NC. It seems to be grossly inflated for NC! I'm trying to figure out if I should work in NY for a year (so as not to be considered a "new grad") and then think about applying in NC or if I should just bite the bullet and move right away.
Anyone with any insight or advice please reply
THANKS SO MUCH!

I'm not sure of the specifics of the UNCW program, but I do know that they are building a brand new building for the Nursing School and that it's absolutely gorgeous.
Also, here's an article from our local paper saying how wages in Wilmington are often a little bit lower than the rest of the state, but not necessarily in all fields and it has the average RN wage. http://www.starnewsonline.com/article/20100410/ARTICLES/100409601/1004?Title=Wages-in-Wilmington-often-lower-than-N-C-averages
However, living by the beach is worth it in my opinion!
Thanks for the article. It's nice to know that nurses in NC at least earn $50K. I was finding info that the pay was in the low $40's. I'm sure it takes awhile to get closer to the avg, but at least it's up there. It's still cheaper than staying in NY. People think that NY nurses are spoiled because of the hourly rate, but when you factor in the cost of living, we make less that a lot of other states (on LI at least). Here's an example: We looked at a brand new house in NC for $250K (plus $1k/year taxes) that equivalent house in NY (if it existed) would be at least $650K (plus $15K/year in taxes). No I'm not exaggerating, the taxes here are THAT HIGH!! Suddenly that $15K a year more we get paid, it gone due to your taxes!
Oh and my hubby and I saw the new Nursing building on the UNCW campus - they must be doing something right if they got funding for that!
Thanks again!

I got my BSN from UNCW. They have very high standards and prepare you well. I had to move, I really wanted to go to UNC-CH.
