I will be starting in the fall as a CNL student at UMAB and I wanted to derive any info I can from people here who have been through UMAB Nursing. Is there a "right-off-the-bat" test on basic math skills or a similar test administered prior to classes starting? My wife is a TU Nursing graduate, and she told me that such a test was given to her class prior to the start of the semester, and that a 100% correct score was required to proceed in the program. There was a single redo, but a subsequent sub-100% score meant you were out of the program. Needless to say, she found it to be a high stress situation (yes only the first of many for a Nurse LOL).
Anyway, just wondering if we greenhorns can expect something along the same lines? Perhaps I could do some brushing up ahead of time...
Thanks!

Can't speak for the CNL program, but I chuckled because we were lamenting last evening about our program and the fact that we have to keep taking math tests each semester. They become progressively more intense, obviously; as does your med calc. needs for clinical. Our math tests are also pass/fail (not sure what the cut off is for fail) and if you fail; you're out. One of our professors who teaches 4th semester said she was very discouraged because she had two good student nurses who each failed thier final semester math test. It was a real shame.
Yes, you're right. Some things just don't seem fair.
Congrat's of the CNL program!
On a serious note, brushing up. I would suggest becoming comfortable with dimensional analysis. Depending upon your current level, there is a great little basic math book called "Math for Nurses". It's a little paper back, concise and well worth the review if your math skills are quite rusty.
Check out your library. There are lots of books on med calculations and nursing math. You shouldn't have to go out and buy one to review.
Thank you very much for the information. I assume that both programs will have similar testing because they share so much in other respects as well. I will definitely track down a text of some sort and brush up on my math so I am prepared going in. Thanks again!

Yes, you take the med calc test the first week. It is very short and there are practice questions online. The first semester the requirement is 90%, subsequent semesters it's 100%. They allow 2-3 retakes.
