UCSF WHNP/CNM Dual Degree Program

Hello everyone,

I'll give you a little background information about myself. I am currently a pre-nursing student. I have only a Physiology course left, which I am taking this spring semester, before applying to my community college's nursing program in May. Our program has just been switched to a merit based system and I am hopeful that it won't be too hard to get in. We'll see though. I am one of those who have to have a detailed plan in place when it comes to my educational goals. Of course things can change and may not always work out as planned, however, if that happens I will adjust accordingly :). I am planning to get accepted and start the ADN program this fall. It is a four semester program. In addition, during this summer of 2014 and the summer of 2015 I will finish up CSU transfer courses. I will graduate in Spring of 2016 (assuming I do in fact get accepted in the fall). After I hope to complete a
RN
to BSN program. I am choosing this route so that I can hopefully work during the
RN
to BSN program, however, if I were not accepted into the ADN program I would consider applying directly into Pre-licensure BSN program once I complete transfer courses. After, I plan to apply to the Women's Health NP/CNM dual program at California State University, San Francisco. My ultimate questions are.. 1. Has anyone applied, been accepted, completed, or know any information on how difficult it is to get accepted to this program, or any valuable information, and what were your stats? I currently have a 3.79 GPA (I got two B's that I consistently beat myself up about although I know I shouldn't) but hope to have raised it by the time I am applying to the M.S. program. I am hoping (lots of hoping here!) to get a job in L&D as a new grad. My school closely works with the DMC in my area hiring new grads and my husbands aunt is a nurse there who has told me they do hire new grads directly into L&D. The M.S. program prefers that you have a year experience related to the area of specialization so I would like to have that. Also.. 2. I have read that in 2015 NP's will be required to have a doctorate degree. Since I will obviously not be applying before then I understand my educational plan may have to change a bit, however, does anyone have any idea on how the program will likely respond to that requirement and how it will change for future prospects? Is it possible that it will not be affected due to it being a dual degree, with CNM seeming to be the bigger of the two and WHNP almost seeming secondary. I don't know that that is true that is just how their online information pertaining to the program lets on, in my opinion anyway. I still have a long way to go (6 years to be exact) but at this point I am leaning more towards practicing as a WHNP. With that in mind, I guess it seems only likely that it would be affected by the doctorate requirement. Any information is greatly appreciated!!

Didn't mean to be nit picky but there is no campus in SF named CSU-SF. SFSU is a campus of the entire CSU system but they have been using SFSU as their official name and they do not offer a combined WHNP/CNM program. UCSF, a campus of the UC system, however, offers that program you're interested in.

Thank you for the correction. My apologies, UCSF is the school and program I am talking about.

Do you know if there is any way to correct my title?

The title has been edited. I hope this is satisfactory.

Yes! Thank you! :)
