UCSF vs UW

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Hi everyone,

I have recently been lucky enough to be admitted to UW's DNP/FNP program, and am concurrently applying to UCSF's MSN/FNP program.

If I am also lucky enough to be accepted to UCSF, I will have to make a very tough decision!

Does anyone have experiences with either program, and would be willing to help me make a decision between the two?

About me: I currently live in Seattle. My intended patient population/focus is on diverse patients, homeless, and diabetes (Type 1 and 2).

About UW: DNP program; ranked #1 in nation for FNP, #3 for DNP

About UCSF: MSN program; ranked #10 in nation for FNP; focus is on underserved, diverse populations; has my available minor of diabetes; slightly more pricey IMO than UW (maybe $10K difference); city is super expensive!

Thanks in advance everyone! I appreciate the input!

Not an FNP, but just graduated UW's AGNP AC track. FWIW, there's a big BIG focus on underserved populations, health disparities and health equity in the first year of the program. The SON in collaboration with the other health science schools hosted Tent City 3 in on campus in my first year and all 1st-year DNPs were required to interact in some manner with the population of TC3, some tracks more than others (i.e. population health). They are planning on hosting it again this year from what the emails are saying.

There are a couple of classes with a very heavy focus on the topics you mention. There is also a fellowship program with the VA for you primary care folks. I have a friend who was in the AGNP PC track and she was very happy with it. So much so that she applied to and was accepted to both the Seattle and Boise VAMC primary care residency programs.

Hope this helps.
