hi everyone, so my situation goes :

i got my first travel contract in april this year and had it extended up til the beginning of october when my manager asked if i wanted to take a position with the unit. i really enjoyed the unit so i decided to take her offer.

my question now is, my permanent tax home is tx but since ive taken a position, i was wondering where to file my 2011 income tax. go back to texas? or file here in CA since from this month on i'll be employed by a facility here in california?

your knowledge and input would greatly be appreciated. i might have other questions too but can't think of 'em at this moment. thanks in advance.

I am not a professional Tax Adviser. I do believe that all "tax free" money paid to you from the travel company (and that includes money paid on your behalf for housing.) Will be taxable income from the start of your assignment. You may be able to deduct a portion of your expenses as "Moving expenses" or "Job Search" expenses, but you will need the advise of a Professional Tax Preparer. There are lot's of rules regarding "Tax Home" status and right now I believe you will be subject to the tax code in California from the time you first started working in the state, even if you initially were considered a "temporary" employee. Let us know on the Forum how it works out for you. It may help some of us later on if we decide to stop traveling.
