Hi,
I'm planning to do some travel nursing in the NYC area and was curious as to whether the hourly for the position would be lower in Manhattan due to the higher cost of apartments...? I'm talking with several different companies and it's becoming stressful figuring out which ones will offer the best package. I've noticed that the outer boroughs seem to offer a higher hourly, but I'm mostly interested in Manhattan. I've decided to pretty much just go with the recruiter that I feel the most comfortable with. Would something in the upper 20s/hr plus 2500-3000 toward housing be a decent deal for the Manhattan area? Also, is it typical for the hourly to be broken down into hourly base pay and meal allowance? Hmmm.... thanks! :)

Good questions, Erica. I'm also interested in travel nursing to NYC, so I'll be looking forward to any replies to this thread.

In my mind, that much housing allowance is a really good deal. Maybe I should look into a travel job instead of a hospital. They don't do medical insurance, though, right? Hmmm. . .that might not matter for me because I qualify with a disability.
Actually, maybe. Maybe not. But probably. You have to consider the fact that if you were making the same in salary, it would be taxed to hell and back before you pay rent. I don't know how if housing deals like that are pre-tax or not?
Hmmm. I would assume post tax... I'm not supposed to be paying anything for housing except stuff like cable if I wanted. But the entire rent, gas, utilities, and water, etc, would be paid for. I'm not sure if I just took the stripend and find my own housing whether it would be pre or post tax... but it would still be a travel expense anyway, I thought. For the first assignment I was thinking about just going with what they provide me with. Sooo... it's free housing and associated expenses, plus the 26/hr... part of which will be post tax... for meal expenses. I've accepted the offer, so we shall see! It didn't sound too bad... Oh, and I do get free health and dental coverage after a month...! Are you already in NY r0b0tafflicti0n??
The 26/hr sounded a bit on the low side, but I'm just dying to be in the NYC area so I didn't think it was horrible! And I'll be right in Manhattan, which I heard pays lower hourly than other places just because so much more goes toward housing.. Haha... :)
