Complete opposite. They typically give the really sick patients to their staff. Once you prove yourself, they will up your patient acuity.
At the beginning of new assignments, I would always get overflows or the patients the staff didn't want because they were confused, had difficult families, on isolation, or whatever. They want you to succeed and give good care. But overall, I found most hospitals to be very reasonable in their assignments. Of course, your stable patients could always go bad but a good group of staff will be there to back you up.
What unit are you looking to work in when you travel?
I don't feel like anyone has been intentionally unfair to me. At times, I feel like I have been given the easier assignment because I'm "new." Of course, there have been times I felt like I had the hard assignment, but I felt that way when I was a staff nurse too. Well, one time I did feel like I was given an unsafe assignment and I spoke up, called my company, told the nurse manager my concerns and it didn't happen again. You just have to speak up like you would at home if you feel like something isn't right.

Thank you ColoradoRN. At the moment, I'm interested in Oncology and the ER.

Hey Everyone,
When the time is right, I would like to switch over to travel nursing. But I have a question. My dad was talking to his sister-in-law who is an anesthesiologist and she said that the hospitals give travel nurses get some of the most difficult patients.
Is this your experience? Or is it pretty fair in your opinion?
