Transferring RN License to a New State: Timeline?

U.S.A. Massachusetts

Published

Hi Everyone!

I am planning to relocate, and I am in the process of transferring my RN license to the new state. I will moving from IL to MA. How long should I expect the process to take? Also, will most (or any) places allow me to apply for jobs while I am in the process of having my license transferred, i.e. eligible to apply for jobs in MA before my licensure there is official? I know that when I was applying for my first job here in IL, every position I looked at listed "current licensure in the state of Illinois" as a requirement for consideration.

Thanks!

It depends on where you are going. You should probably expect to wait about four weeks, average for endorsement. More in some states, less in others. Once you know for sure where you are going, try asking in that state's forum. But you can have two active licenses, so if you know where you are moving, apply right away.

Your other question, about whether you can apply without an active license, also depends on where you are applying. Some facilities might have a really strict policy, but the majority will probably allow you to apply. Just list your current licensure and specify that you have applied for endorsement in that state.

Uptown, you can apply without a license for MA but the apps generally have you give your MA license # and specifically ask if you are licensed for this state. It is a VERY tight, tough downtrodden market here right now. Most hospitals are running on barebones nursing staff and there's no sign of it getting better any time soon. Some hospitals list many RN positions but are on hiring freezes or don't fill the positions. If there's any possibility of working in a surrounding state, I strongly recommend starting there...
