Transfer to a BSN program or finish bachelor?

Published

Hi guys.

So I feel kind of stuck. I am in my third year, and I can graduate at the end of my fourth year with no problem. So I was originally going to graduate and finish my bachelor then apply for an accelerated BSN program. But it might be harder since accelerated BSN are very competitive.

Do you guys think I should try to transfer at the end of my third year into a BSN program or finish my bachelor and apply for an accelerated program??

Thank you!!

Depends on the quality of the schools involved. Assuming that both are good schools ... I would transfer sooner rather than later and get into the first good program you can get into. I see no real advantage to waiting -- and racking up additional expenses.

what about applying to nursing school and finishing your original bachelor as plan B if you don't get accepted? Then you can re-apply to the regular AND the accelerated BSN.

There are other factors to take into consideration. First, are you receiving any kind of financial aid? If so, that will stop after the conferral of your first Bachelor’s degree. Second, what is your current GPA? If it is stellar, then you may not have any problems with getting in. However, if you are almost finished with your first Bachelor’s degree, then most of your required courses and electives are completed (with the exception of Anatomy & Physiology, Chemistry, ect) uless you have already taken them. In that case, the only courses you would be responsible for taking are the nursing courses.

I would make my decision based upon the answer to the first question. If I am receiving financial aid (in the form of a Pell Grant and state grants) I would simply change majors and finish it out. If I wasn’t receiving aid and my GPA is great, I would finish it up and then apply to accelerated degree programs.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

Hi guys.

I've been trying to research for possible accelerated BSN programs and BSN/MSN programs in CA. I couldn't find a site that provides a complete list of it. Well, at least I hope there are more than 8 accelerated programs out there, as I have been able to find. If you guys can provide me a list or a website with the listings, that would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you so much!!!!

I can't make it quite that easy, but I can make it a little less labor-intensive.

Go to the website of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing; The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education is their accreditation arm.

http://www.aacn.nche.edu/ccne-accreditation/accredited-programs

Click on Baccalaureate and Graduate Nursing Programs. You can then use the pull-down lists to designate a state and program-focused search.

It doesn't distinguish between type of BSN programs, but every institution listed has a web link. Click on it to go directly to the nursing schools, and find out there.

Best of luck! You do have a difficult decision to make, and I don't envy you.
