To extend your duty or not?

Published

My cousin is working at a hospital on 8 hr shift basis. The incoming nurse seems to have this important matter to attend to which prevents her to comply to her duty. My cousin is so upset because we also have this special family gathering that we need to attend to. How will you deal with that situation if you are my cousin?

So the other nurse is late coming into shift? If that's the problem, I'd talk to the nurse manager.

She cannot be able to work for duty.

So she's just not coming in? You need to tell your cousin to tell the management. That is unacceptable.

It is not your cousin's problem that her coworker has things to deal with. It appears that she has prior notice that this coworker is planning to not come in, so she has two choices, 1- agree to cover, 2- say that she is unable to cover and refer the issue to management.

If she decides not to cover she should speak to management about the situation just so she is not left holding the bag when this co-worker is a no-show. It is a nurse's responsibility to ensure that her shift is covered and that this is approved of by management, not the responsibility of the previous shift .
