Time Management

Published

Hello,

I would like some suggestions/opinions about time management and how to effectively use your time during clinicals. I have 12hr clinicals, and I've come to find that time management for 12 hr clinical days can get "out of hand."

Thanks

I used to have the same problem and found myself a bit flustered. What has helped me is mapping out my day, I discovered that if I came in organized, with a plan of what I want to do and when I want to do it, my day goes pretty smoothly. Remember to prioritize your tasks. I also group together different tasks, if I needed vitals I'd throw on the pulse ox, bp cuff, and get the thermometer in all at once. Do not be afraid to delegate, know what your CNA is allowed to do, and you can always ask them to do it. I do assist my CNA from time to time, but if I'm really busy I'd politely ask them to do something for me. It is always a good idea to know the name of the CNA, and chat with them. A good rapport with the staff around you makes your day go a lot smoother as well. Also do not be afraid to say no to the nursing staff. When I first started, I was a bit intimidated by the nurses around me and was a bit of a pushover. I ended up doing accuchecks all day.

Another thing I like to do is coming in a little early and getting some information on my patients. That way I can get a good idea of what to watch out for during the day.
