A man at the nursing home who hardly ever talks said to me today "There is nothing worse than being treated like a baby".
Today a heard 2 other aides (who had 10 min to spare at the end of their shift) sitting in a residents room (the residents were "sleeping") and chatting away about personal things. I know because I was in the next room changing a resident. If I could hear them all the way across the hall, imagine what the people in the room trying to sleep were hearing.
I heard another aide say she wasn't going to get her resident up because she (the aide) was just too tired and didn't feel like it.
When my resident was being a bit grumpy to me and I just let it go and walked away, another CNA who happened to be walking by said "I would NEVER let him talk to me that way and you shouldn't either!" I told her I wasn't going to get into a power struggle with an elderly man in a nursing home...
These are just a few things I noticed today and they're little things that show disrespect. I hope I'm not treated the same way some day when I can't take care of myself anymore.

You did the right thing Who doesn't get grumpy sometimes? I had a resident tell me one time that it was like living in a glorified prison and that the CNAs were like the officers, when I asked her why she thought of it that way she replied, "You tell us when to get up, when to go to bed, when to go eat, when to shower, and when to take our medicine." I never thought of it like that before, but she was right.

((HUGS)) It still amazes me the way people treat the elderly.

Some people just don't seem to have any sense in their heads.
Being a CNA in a nursing home is one of the toughest jobs there is, in my opinion.
Thank you for all you do, and the compassionate way.

It is so very sad how some elderly are treated. Thank you for extending grace to your resident!

Some people take this job just to have a job. It's only 4 weeks training in most places of course they're not doing nothing at home and they go for it. But they don't appreciate it. Cna is from the heart not just a pay check.

As a Nurse, i would not treat people in a nursing home that way….. Especially, because my father was in a nursing home and I know how they can be treated and I was solo worried!! I was there almost everyday to make sure he had what he needed. Thank goodness at the time he was in the busing hem he still had his sense of humor and most people got along with him!!
But it is hurtful to see others that are unhappy be treated with NO Respect!! THAT PERSON IS SOMEONE's MOTHER OR FATHER!!! Do you want your parents treated that way?? Do YOU want to be treated that way???
I agree with you 100%. May the care in our nursing homes only increase with kindness and caring!!
Happy Thanksgiving to ALL!!!

Do not take what patients say personally. I once had a post op patient - a young (~30y.o) woman who had a bilateral mastectomy and implants for breast CA on one side. She'd had lymphoma? since she was a teen, which resulted in a splenectomy. So imagine, a nauseous woman in severe pain who just had both breasts removed and replaced, who has been a patient since she was 16. The tech went in there to do vitals and fill out the property form. Apparently patient had no patience for the property form at that moment and tech was offended at how this was expressed and took it personally. She said she was going to avoid going into the room.

I agree. All people deserve respect. Even those you see everyday :)

It's sad that we actually have to TELL people they should respect the elderly. That should be our default position. I don't care if they're demented and act like children---they are not children, and to treat them that way is wrong. These people fought wars, raised families, built homes and businesses, contributed to society. They deserve not only our respect, but our thanks as well.

it all comes down to what do you see when you look at the pt.
if all out you can see is a brief that needs changed you're losing out
and most of the time you'll be miserable at work
grumpy doesn't bother me at all, as i usually say
"I needed a talking to"
