Thinking about applying for a sub position

Published

Hi! I'm currently a Labor & Delivery/Postpartum/GYN nurse considering applying for a per diem RN position within my city school district. I spent a week with a school RN during a family & community health class and loved the challenges (exploding pen in the mouth, "I forgot my lunch", "I don't have gym clothes", "my glasses broke",etc.), in addition to bumps, bruises, admitting new kids to the school, hearing screens, and the like.

Now I know being a school nurse isn't all fun and sunshine, and there is a lot of responsibility involved. Can you tell me a little bit about the challenges and rewards you've experienced? I think it will help me figure out if I really am suited for the job.

Thanks in advance!

Specializes in NICU.

One of my coworkers is subbing for school nurses in her children's school district. She is really enjoying herself - says it's a real challenge after 15-20 years of working NICU because there is so much going on in schools these days. She is learning a lot, meeting new people, getting decent pay, and is gererally really liking the variety it offers. She works PRN in the NICU as well. She doesn't think she'd ever go back to being full-time at either job, but she will continue to do both PRNs for quite some time.

Can't tell you much more about the actual job, but just thought you'd like to know that other nurses have tried it and really liked it.
