Dear Potential Participant,
I am Jonathan Sizemore, a graduate student in the Communication Disorders
Program at Eastern Kentucky University. My master's thesis examines the use of
augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) in intensive care units (ICUs).
AAC is defined for this study as any form of communication used when oral speech
cannot be achieved. The survey design research looks to examine the use of AAC
systems in ICUs from the perspective of both speech-language pathologists and
registered nurses. It aims to examine frequency of use of AAC systems in the ICU,
nurses' knowledge about AAC, clinical decision-making, and family and staff
education on selected AAC systems. Your participation and input as a respected
professional would be greatly valued.
In order to participate in the survey, you must be a licensed and ASHA certified
speech-language pathologist or a licensed registered nurse and have worked in the
ICU within the past year. Your participation in this survey is entirely voluntary. You
are not required to provide any personally identifiable information. All data will be reported in
aggregate in my thesis as well as at professional conferences and/or meetings.
Please click link below if you meet the participation requirements:

Should you have any question about the research or your participation, please
contact me at [email protected], or my thesis mentor,
Tamara Cranfill, PhD, CCC-SLP, at [email protected].
Thank you for your time and consideration. Your participation will inform the
profession with regard to AAC use in ICUs.

Please note that even if you infrequently or never see augmentative and alternative communication systems in your ICU, you absolutely may participate and are encouraged to do so! Thank you.
*REMINDER* The survey is still open. Regardless of your knowledge about augmentative/alternative communication, if you're an ICU nurse you can participate. Your participation would be very much appreciated. Thank you!
The survey is STILL open. It would be very much appreciated if you took just a few minutes to complete the survey. Thank you!
*FINAL REMINDER* The survey will be closing soon. If you could take a few minutes to participate, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
