I failed my first attempt at the NCLEX. I relied on ATI to get me through and it failed me. I took 190 questions and found out I failed 2 days later. After rethinking the entire process, I borrowed a friends filled out Hurst review book and studied that most days for a couple of hours until my next test came. I didn't do a lot of questions like I did the time before, but I did do 2 of the Hurst Q reviews to gauge where I was at. I scored an 83 and a 69. I went into the test having studied the Hurst book, memorized lab values, and looked over the mnemonics for isolation. I PASSED with 75 questions! I thought the topics covered in the Hurst review are what helped the most as well as knowing the mnemonic for infection control. I had a ton of SATA questions which mostly revolved around isolation and precautions. I just wanted to tell people that even if you don't pass the first time around it is not the end of the world. Look at your weaknesses and focus on those areas, but also do some generalized studying to brush up on other topics as well. You dont have to spend a ton of time every day on the material. Take it in small doses and you will remember it so much better.

Thank you for this post. I also failed the first time. I borrow someone's hurst book as well, I read it twice. Did about 150 questions daily. I did Kaplan qbanks, ncsbn questions, and reviewed the hurst tests. You think I should be ok the next time around????
I think you will do great! If you feel like you know the core content and lab values as well as what to do in isolation situations you will do great! Use the note sheet provided to write what you know about each question. For example I had a question about hypocalcemia and before reading the answers I took time to write everything I knew about it. Then I looked at the answers and found the one that either I had described or was close to what I knew. I did this on so many of the questions. I also really took my time on each question. I made sure I knew if it was looking for a positive or negative answer (true false) and found the appropriate answer. Hurst has a ton of little sayings that help a ton like pain never killed anyone in questions about priority. Just take your time on each question and like I said wrote notes as you go. Be sure not to write anything on the note paper util after the tutorial as that is called dumping and you will get in trouble. Just keep reviewing until the big day. Find mnemonics that work for you and other tricks an you will do great!!! Try to relax and go slow on the test also!
