Theoretical framework for phenomenological study

Published

Hello fellow nurses,

This is the first time I am posting to allnurses.com. So, please bear with me if I have made an error in posting this material in wrong section.

I am in need of some help! I am writing a qualitative research proposal on nurses lived experience of communicating with patients who are non-verbal. The methodology chosen is descriptive phenomenology. I am having trouble knowing what theoretical framework can guide my study! I thought of Peplau's theory of interpersonal relations but I am not quite sure how it will help me explore nurses lived experience. I thought of it because it places emphasis on interpersonal relation between nurse-client and requires communication to address client needs.

Any help or guidance would be appreciated.

The AACN Synergy Model is one that I use a lot and might guide you in your inquiry. It states that there are eight nurse competencies and nurses lie on a continuum for each- for example, advocacy/moral agency, caring practices, and facilitator of learning. There are also eight patient characteristics such as vulnerability and participation in care. This model bears some similarities to Benner's novice-to-expert model.

Neuman's systems model would be another one you might consider.
