The Western Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing

Published

Is there anyone else who applied or is planning on applying?

I haven't been on here for awhile, so here's my deal: I was working on pre-reqs to apply to my community college for Fall 2010 admission. Then I came across West Penn's website and realized that I have everything I need now to apply for Fall 2009 admission so I went for it. I mailed my application and transcript requests today, I just gotta wait for reference forms so I can get those filled out and then I will have to re-send my transcripts at the end of this semester since I am currently taking Chemistry. I'm pretty excited at this prospect (though perhaps I shouldn't be; I have no idea what the odds are that I'll get in, but I'm trying to be pessimistic to avoid a let-down), since West Penn hospital is known for excellence in nursing, is a magnet hospital, etc. I've delivered 2 of my 3 kids there, so I know from first-hand experience that they have excellent nurses, doctors, everything really. I'm assuming the nursing school would be really good for that reason.

Just wondering if there's anyone else with me :wink2:

I'm currently waiting to hear from WPHSON. I applied back in January and still have yet to hear from them...I'm patient but it's taking it's toll on me. I went to the information session in March and they told us that there were 40 some spots still available so in those regards we should still have a shot. It's just a waiting game but I'm hoping to hear something soon because I need to move 4hrs to go to WPHSON so I'd really like to start looking for places etc. Let me know if you hear anything from them and good luck...they are my first choice and I would love to be a student there.

P.S. If you need to call them, plan on calling everyday They never answer the phones or return calls.

Good luck to you  I really hope we're both able to get in. It's also my first choice. I love that place from the patient perspective, so I imagine it would be pretty good working/learning there as well. I sent all my stuff in, but like I said have to wait for the end of my school semester for my transcript to be re-sent because I'm currently in Chemistry. I'm not very optimistic for that reason  My Chemistry teacher even sent a letter of reference for me, but it never got there for some reason (or at least hadn't when I'd spoken to them, about a week after it was mailed out.) Have you ever tried e-mailing the admissions secretary? The e-mail is on their website. She's been really helpful and has responded to any questions pretty promptly. She actually called me one time because my e-mail was so long and filled with so many questions LOL.

Where will you be moving from? I love the area around the hospital. Bloomfield and Lawrenceville are nice (I'm not sure which one it's technically in), and Shadyside is nearby. I wish I could live down there but the hubby works where we're living now (about an hour north.)

Let me know too when you find out. I haven't been waiting near as long as you and I'm getting impatient too

I haven't emailed them but thats a really good idea because I left 2 messages last week with them and can never get a response. I think I will email them this afternoon.:typing Yeah the chemistry thing would make me kind of nervous too, but if they see your taking it now I wouldn't think it would be a huge issue, hopefully. I'm actually moving from Central PA (Williamsport Area). I have not decided where I'm going live I thought about maybe just dealing with living at WPHSON (though the last thing I want to do is suffer through dorm life again) but I'm not sure. I def wouldn't be there the whole time because I'm getting married next year. My fiance is from Butler and works in Butler and never wants to leave Butler so we are looking for housing near 28 or route 8. I also though really like the area the hospital is in but there is no way I'm going to get him to drive through traffic like that everyday. Anyways have you applied anywhere else?

I am going to apply to UPMC Shadyside after I take their entrance exam in May (assuming I do well enough.) The deadline for that is in June. It's very near West Penn. If I don't get in either place, I am going to apply to CCAC for spring and maybe Shadyside again (they admit fall and spring), and if neither of those pan out, I will also apply to Butler County Community College for Fall 2010. So I have several options, hopefully one of them will work out. How about you, have you applied anywhere else?

Yeah, I've also applied at Shadyside...don't stress the test it's really not that bad. The only part that I thought was difficult was the science section but since your in chemistry right now that should really help. I just got my application out to them on Friday. I also applied to CCAC North but my transcripts from my high school didn't get to them by the deadline so I think its a long shot to get in there. It's just a matter of waiting now! Good luck on Shadyside's test!

Thanks :) That's really encouraging about the test. I have heard that the science section is kinda difficult. Did you ever take any Physics? That's what I'm most worried about, since I never have.

Did you actually visit Shadyside's school? I've heard alot of good stuff on here from current and former students who really enjoyed their time there.

Yeah, I did take physics in high school (06) but didn't do that well, but I did do well on the Shadyside test but there were a lot of electricity questions and things like that and I had no clue what the answers were. I did go see Shadyside in March and I really liked it. It is more modern then WPHSON but I'm partial to WPHSON because I'm a former student of Clarion University and I've wanted to go back since I left. I do think that Shadyside has a nicer facility and more technology so in that aspect I like Shadyside more. I've read all the blogs on here and people do seem to really like Shadyside so if I end up getting into both it's going to be a very hard decision. We talked to the students at Shadyside, who were giving the tour, and they all seemed to like it. They said it was really hard but that the teachers give you everything you need to get a good grade. I also like that they have tuition assistance since i have 3 years of undergrad loans. Just to let you know when applying to Shadyside I talked to Natalie and she let me send everything (application, transcripts, recommendations) all in one big package, which was a lot easier. Of course everything had to be in there own sealed envelopes but that way I know everything got to Shadyside without problems and she can sit down and look at it all, instead of waiting for it all to get to the school but just thought I would let you know also as of March 14th they still hadn't even sat down to start looking at applicants.

Well you just made me feel a whole lot better about the test :D I scheduled it so late so I would be able to study the practice books. Hopefully that will be enough.

Laura, have you heard yet? They just got the last piece of my application two weeks ago (turns out, it was okay about the Chemistry, I think they were waiting on alot of applicant's final transcripts) and I am now waiting to hear. The waiting is getting to me too.
