Can anyone send me in a direction for resources (handouts, guides, ideas, etc) for teaching the families of Alzheimer's patients? I have a teaching plan tomorrow and I've unearthed some good ideas, but I'm still coming up short. So far, I have a really cool idea about teaching the family the importance of reminiscence through building a memory box to review with the patient. And I found a website with basic information for families. Any other ideas??

Hi!
I know it said in your post you had a plan today so this might be a little late but here are some pointers...
*Teach the family that consistency is key. Alzheimers patients need routine to feel safe and having a daily routine that rarely changes help immensely.
*Implementing as many things that the patient can do safely by himself will allow him to still feel in control of his life. Examples being no buttons or hard to work clasps on clothes, even a picture chart showing the order clothes go on in the morning or night can be helpful. Shoes with velcro instead of laces etc.
*Definitely teach the family to approach the pt. calmly and watch for a sign that he is going to become agitated. Most Alzheimers pt's give a warning-though sometimes it is vague- that they are becoming agitated and at times may swing at you. If you can watch for this you can prevent a worse situation.
*Good idea by keeping familiar objects near the pt. Things like pictures, personal blankets etc. are great.
Good luck!
