Taking a travel position and be put up at the Metropolitan......is this area safe....and will I be able to take my dog out frequently without getting mugged?

Downtown Tacoma varies. It looks like you're close to the water, so if my memory serves me right, there are some trails there you can walk during the day. Downtown has been undergoing a lot of construction over the years in order to provide a more cultured and inviting community. You'll be close to the University of Washington-Tacoma campus, History Museum, Glass Museum and lots of great restaurants. I'd say you'll be fine as long as you remain alert and maybe carry a small can of pepper spray just in case.On your off days you can take your dog to an off-leash dog park in Lakewood (Fort Steilacoom Park)- it's a lot of fun.

Thanks so much..guess Im a little nervous

they were going to put me on a golf course and then email me the news of staying there...it looks like a fancy hotel more than an apartmen.....I really like being able to step outside and have some greenery going on instead of cement..I think I will feel closed in...but maybe the trade off of being close to a lot of things will help..Thanks for you answer

Welcome to Tacoma! I have lived here for most of my life and can help give you a little insight into that neighborhood. The Metropolitan is in a part of downtown that is closer to the residential area of Tacoma rather than the "core" of downtown. I'm sure that you have looked at the website for the Metropolitan. You can see that it is located about 2 blocks from Division Ave. This almost literally divides the residential area (single family residences) from the "downtown" area (stores, condos, restaurants, commercial buildings, etc). A few years back, there was a tour of new apartment complexes in downtown Tacoma. The Metropolitan was our favorite - close enough to downtown, yet far enough away that you don't have to deal with the crime and traffic element. The inside of the complex is also very nice. It does have more of a "hotel" vibe, but a NICE hotel! Yes, it's true that the Metropolitan doesn't have much of an outdoor area (if I remember correctly, they don't have anything outside at all). However, you are only 2 blocks away from Wright Park. This is a lovely park that has a lot of foot traffic and I would feel perfectly safe there. Of course, if you plan on walking around in the dark I would be more guarded and would carry pepper spray. But during the day, you would be just fine. Fort Steilacoom Dog Park is great too - about 20 minutes away.

When are you coming to Tacoma? From May 15th-October 16th, there is a farmers market in downtown Tacoma on Thursdays. They have all kinds of fun booths set up with food, flowers, fruit/veggies, gifts, etc. I love going, but parking can sometimes be a pain. Lucky for you, you would only be about 3 blocks away.

Let me know if you have any more questions about the area.

Thanks so much for your response...will arrive there April 25th....will be working at Lakewood..nights/ICU

I think it is one of the smaller hospitals ther but I hope to also do some per diem..in hospitals that St. Fransicans do not manage...any suggestions greatful...

I starting to get excited about getting there ..have been in Northern California over last 6 months..

Then returning to Louisiana...I decided to do this as I probably will never get this far north again
