Summer Nurse Internship at Ochsner

U.S.A. Louisiana

Specializes in MICU & SICU.

Hi there,

I'm in the process of applying for Ochsner's Summer Nurse Internship. Seeing as I'm from out of state and would be moving to NOLA for the summer if I'm offered the position, I'm desperately seeking information from anyone with any knowledge of the program.

Mainly I'm curious about the hours, experience and estimated pay rate.

There are a few fantastic programs where I'm located, but NOLA is my destination once I graduate and I've heard good things about Ochsner from a Paramedic who works in the area. Any nursing input on this would be much appreciated.

:wink2:

Thank you!

I would definitely recommend the program, especially if you plan on moving to New Orleans after you graduate. I did the program last summer and learned more than I ever did in clinicals. It is very organized and all of the staff is interested in making sure you get the most from it. You will work full time, typically 3 days of 12 hour shifts. I had one month of days and one of nights. Base pay last summer was $10.00 per hour with differentials for weekends and nights, I don't remember exactly what they were. Do you know people living in the area already? If you have any specific questions or worries feel free to send me a private message.

I too did the summer nurse tech program last summer and I thought it was very beneficial. I ended up staying on and working PRN throughout the semester. The key to learning new things is having an awesome preceptor and nurses that love to teach. You will basically be paired with a nurse preceptor and you will work her schedule along with her. This may include a weekend every other week but it just depends on the department you go to and how they rotate the schedules. We also got to switch to a second department in the middle of the program. You get to shadow in any other department you want for at least a day too. I think they offer relocation assistance for people who don't live in town for the program or at least they did last year. I hope this helps!

I also applied for the Summer Nurse Tech position. I am very nervous about how the interview with the panel is.. Could someone please direct me in what kinds of things are asked . I get nervous when asked things on the spot and don't want to "shut down' so I like to be somewhat prepared!! Thanks if anyone can help :)
