Study Help - Dosage Calculation

Hi,

I'm kind of lost on this one. I would appreciate some help, please.

Problem:

Order: nebulize Proventil 0.5 mL sol'n in 2.5 mL NS

On hand: Albuterol sol'n for inhalation 0.5%

Calculate the mg/dose?

My answer sheet has 2.5 mg/dose but my calculations does not arrive at that. Do I understand correctly that the Albuterol sol'n has 0.5g/100 mL?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Desired : 0.5

____________ = 1 x volume 2.5 =2.5 mg/dose

Available : 0.5

Thank you, krisandnoahsmom.

If you please, can you show me the step by step process as to how you arrived at mg/dose?

From my understanding the 0.5% of Albuterol signifies 0.5g/100mL of Albuterol sol'n. Based on this, my calculations will show a different answer. I just need to make sense of it.

Right now this would be how I work it out:

0.5 mL

_______

100 (0.5) g/mL = 0.5 mL (squared) = 0.01 mL(squared)/g x 2.5 mL =

50 g

answer: 0.025 mL (cubed)/g

I really am confused. Thanks in advance.

albuterol sulfate for inhalation 0.5% is 2.5mg/0.5mL

so if you use the ordered 0.5mL, you're using 2.5mg.

I didn't really arrive at this answer using math, but did so instead finding some info about the drug.

kafluknik, you are right about the concentration being 0.5g/100mL.

Advertised: 2.5mg/0.5mL (x2 to make 1mL) = 5.0mg/mL (x100mL) = 500mg/100mL => 0.5g/100mL

To get the answer just determine how many mg are in (the ordered) 0.5mL.

0.5g/100mL = 500mg/100mL = 5mg/mL = 2.5mg/0.5mL (0.5mL was ordered) = 2.5mg/dose

Thank you very much Stearnsy!!!!

Phew!!! now this makes sense. What a big help :yeah:thank you,thank you. So clear.
