Hey everyone,
I'm currently a nursing student in my first year of an accelerated program. I'm trying to sort out summer employment for July-Aug. Does anyone have ideas? I'm pretty open but would like to gain experience related to nursing.
I'm thinking PSW so far, but not sure they would hire for just 2 months.
Any advice is appreciated!
Thank you ?

When I was a nursing student, I worked as the second nurse at kids' camps over the summer months. I spent one summer working at an Easter Seals camp, which was amazing experience! I spent another summer working at a general kids' camp in more of a First Aid capacity, but also did some basic nursing care. Both were really interesting positions that gave me both nursing experience, and a good amount of social time with others who were my own age. Camps tend to draw a university-aged crowd for staffing. During the school year, I worked as a Home Support Worker. Because of my nursing classes, I often got given the more medically fragile clients to work with, which gave me amazing nursing experience, and a lot of confidence when I finally graduated from nursing school. In my experience, there are many options if you are willing to look around, especially outside of acute care. Not all of them pay great, but for me, gaining nursing experience was far more important than getting a set amount of income. What province are you in? That may help others here to give you a response that is more tailored to your needs.

Now looking back to my younger years which is 1.5 years ago, I wish I didnt work as a psw during the summer but really enjoyed it or learn something I like so I can use it as tool to fight the overwhelming stress when I'm working FT.. which is now ?

If you must stay employed, I'd say do camp nursing like the first reply said they did, or event nursing, like at festivals, concerts, marathons (I think they often take student nurses for basic first aid).
That said, having come from an accelerated program, I agree with the second poster and I'd recommend enjoying the last two months of freedom you'll have LOL. You'll spend the next summer studying for your licensing exam and then applying for nursing jobs, then you'll be working. Enjoy the break.
Either way, hope you find something good!
