Okay, here it is. I am doing a paper for my mental health class, and its a "Violence Self Study" paper. I need help with my last question. It states "You are caring for an 85 yr-old male with senility and cardiovascular problems. He has a history of violence and alcohol abuse. He has exposed himself to 2 aides, and pulled a nurse into bed with him. This AM during his shower, he took a swing at the aide giving him the shower. You have documented this incident, what actions can you do next and why?"

The only thing I can think of is that you tell all the staff to go into this man's room in pairs. Just make them aware of his behaviors, and if he is not at a psych hospital, get a psych consult. Do I seem to be on the right track? If anyone could help me, I would really appricate it! Ive been working on this for over a week, and i am about at my wits end! Thank you in advance!

Yes-get a psych. consult. Also ask for a urine C. and S. UTI's and infections cause delirium and can cause or exacerbate behavioral problems in the elderly. Check his temp.-is he febrile? The patient should also be told firmly when he is being inappropriate.(I don't know how demented he is.) Never step between him and a door in case he wants to bolt. Be careful and don't approach him alone or turn your back on him. It sounds like he may need some meds so get a good Psych. APRN to do a psych consult.n He/ she can also help the staff develop a nursing care plan for the pt's behavioral dyscontrol.- Good luck!

Thank you so much for responding! That really helps!!

I'm in agreement but I would bet the psych consult comes up empty. He sounds like a kind of nasty old guy who has been disinhibited by dementia.
