Struggling new RN. I don't know which nursing is best for me!

Nurses Career Support

Published

I am a newly graduated RN in Canada. When I graduated, I got hired on to a NICU (where I preceptored). I worked on the NICU for about 6 months, but was told I wasn't cutting it and that I needed to get my act together before x amount of time. I was also told that I had a bad preceptor from both of my managers. I was constantly stressed out and just anxious. My prioritization and time management sucked, and so I resigned. NICU nursing was not for me. When I am under pressure or nervous, I come off as incompetent and I can't think clearly. I find that I'm panicking when "things" happen. I am now jobless with only 6 months of NICU nursing experience.

Now, I'm unsure of what nursing field I can even go into... I still love nursing, but I want to develop my skills in an area where I am able to provide safe patient care at my current level. I found out the hard way that critical care was not for me, and now I'm afraid of even applying for other hospital/acute care jobs for fear of not being able to provide safe patient care and be at the level employers want me to be at.

Please, if anyone has suggestions of different nursing fields I could try out, please let me know. I'm desperate and feeling so discouraged. I have considered public health nursing and have applied to many postings. I, however, need a "backup" plan of a different nursing to go into if I don't get a job soon, as I do need to pay off student loans still.

Thank you
