Strategy on Passing the AANP Exam

Published

I told myself after passing the exam I would share my strategy since this and other nursing sites helped me getting ready for the AANP exam. Below is from most to least helpful:

  • APEA question bank - bought a 2 month subscription and did pretty much every question with reading the rationales and re-taking questions that I missed; probably took about 200 questions/day. This was a great tool.
  • Amelie's CDs - I purchased her APEA 21 CDs from a friend; didn't go to a live class, but these CDs rocked.
  • Fitzgerald's online class --- took this class, just my personal opinion, Amelie is much more entertaining to listen to; Fitgerald though has a set of questions after each topic, in addition to a practice test at the end, practice test was good!
  • Leik book - loved this book and would switch between this, notes taken from Amelie's CDs and Fitzgerald class. Leik set her book up very well, would start each chapter with red flag diseases, then how to assess for the organ system, and other commonly found disease processes; she also provided exam tips; and 600+ questions in the back of the book.
  • NPExamEdge - purchased the pack of 10 exams, with rationales - found this helpful and a confidence builder.
  • AANP practice test - found these questions helpful and of course similar to the exam questions.
  • Fitgerald's NP Certification review book + 2,000 online question bank; this book is fabulous and detailed, but I really bought it for the questions - the way the question tool is set up, it doesn't give you rationales for missed question immediately, and it is difficult to scroll through the tool, probably would skip this the next time.
  • Predictor exams - took about 3 predictor exams from APEA.
  • The week before my exam I would take a set of 150 questions from any of the above tools and take them the same time my exam was scheduled for, just to get me prepared for that morning.

The above is probably over doing it, but wanted to make sure I was prepared as possible! Good luck to future NPs in taking the exam:-)))).
