Stony Brook vs. Molloy Programs

Published

I will be applying to both and would love to hear anything good, bad, or indifferent on either one. I am truly torn between the two at this point. I'll give you a little background.

I am a licensed veterinary technician changing careers and have over 120 credits between two associates degrees already. I am aiming for a BA, I don't want nor need another associates. I plan to keep going into a masters program in the future, I have a weird love for school. I can apply to Molloy for Spring 2010, Stony Brook doesn't start until Fall 2010. Molloy will take me 3 yrs, but I can start sooner and it's a private school. Stony Brook is further away but cheaper and I can be out in 2 yrs.

Please share your experience so I can come to a decision!

Can anyone give me information about either of these schools? I'd like to hear your experiences with these schools or even any others on Long Island.

Hi, I am actually in the same position you are in right now! I just transferred to Molloy because I know the nursing program is great there and they make sure you come out knowing everything and have a job. BUTTT!!! I am so un happy at Molloy, the people are rude and very clicky. No one is nice there and its impossible to make friends. They do not offer anything at the campus. Mainly because it is so small. I still have to use my old college library because theres has nothing, which is annoying. They are un organized as well, and the people in the offices are very rude also. I hate it everyday I come home from class I am looking into new schools to go to. I have been there for two months n still have no friends and I am very outgoing. Stony brook is a whole diff story, i Just appiled there for spring 2010, I went twice this week for tours and to go in classes. I LOVE sb. Its a great school people are soo nice to you and they helped me find my way around all day. They have so much there to do, eat, extra help like you wouldnt believe. The only thing that I am stuck on is the class sizes. The max class size is around 500 people. All of your classes wont be like that though just a few. As you get towards you major the class sizes get alot smaller to 40 20 people. Stony Brook is a great school for nursing and any other medical field you would like to go in to. But then again if your coming from Molloy you will get a job right away. Its such a tough decision, do I stay and be un happy or do I go to stony Brook and possibly make it harder for myself. I dont know my self but I hope I was able to help you out!

Thanks for sharing, sorry about your situation. I didn't think SB had a program that started in the Spring, what program is that? I think Molloy may be too pricey for me anyway.

I looked into both schools. On the phone and in person SB is so helpful and has plently 'customer service' pleasantness lol

Molloy on the other hand yuck!! I dont even know why I went there after the phone conversations. Cold, blunt and callous!!

Its too bad because its 18 mins from me. where as SB is 47mins.

sorry I couldnt figure how to send PMs.

ETA: LOL the icons just appeared after my other post just now! lol I guess its after you made a certain # of posts...

Hello Tee

can you elaborate on your comment about molloy grads having a guarantee job placement vs stony brook grads.

so far I have been told the opposite, I am currently attending the stony brook nursing program and I know their program was extremely competitive as far as getting in then molloy,,

molloy only wanted pre-reqs and a 3.0 gpa and stony brook, well its a very long list of things they look for.

so not sure how that plays out once one graduates, being that people have to do a lot more to get into one over the other?

How did you get in to SB??? Tell me your secret! Congratulations! How is the program, I've been trying, in vain, to speak to SB students about their experiences...how do you like it so far? Any pointers on applying?

well the experience is amazing, the professors are great and the fact they are part of a huge health care system and the hospital is a huge plus.

as far as getting in, there is no secret, they have information sessions once a month I highly recommend you go to one. also may be trying to becoming the pre-nursing society at stony brook helps.

you want to stand out as an applicant,

volunteer work is impt even thought not required.

good letters of recommendation, impt

and a good personal statement is a must.

and if they put you on a waiting list, be happy,,,cause I was upset that they did that, but they get last minute funding and they will accept ppl, the last minute.

hope this helps,

Stony Brook has a GREAT nursing Program!!!! Most of the faculty are genuinely nice.. They are always receptive to answering any questions you may have during their office hours and go beyond the call of their duty. One of the head faculty even held NCLEX review sessions for FREE during the summer time for whoever wanted extra help preparing.

For the Core part of your nursing classes (fundamentals, OB, Peds, med-Surg, psych, community), class size is fairly small ranging from 30-50.. the biggest class size you will have is for Pharmacology and 1 other class (forgot the name) where you are combined with all the PA, clinical laboratory study, and respiratory therapist students.

Someone mention about having 500 students in a class, that is true but only if you are part of the regular Stony Brook campus, not the nursing program. Usually as a freshman when taking ur 100 level chemistry or biology is when you'll have those huge lectures.

As for secrets? there really are no secrets, just have Great grades, related experience helps, community service, etc. I believe my year when i applied in 2007, around 600 applied and 34 were taken and every year the application rate increases.

Well i just recently graduated from SB program and loved it! outside of academics, there are many extracurricular activies and organizations which you can join. well if you have any other questions, feel free to ask..
