Starting down the path of nursing

Nursing Students General Students

Greetings! After reading this forum for a few months, I've finally decided to join and let my voice be heard in the community. I am currently a college student and will be entering my sophmore year in the fall. After a long endearing quest for picking a college major I have finally decided that nursing is the best fit for me! Still have a long way to go since I'm still completing pre-reqs, but I am thrilled to finally be working towards my future! As far as other things go, I would just like to hear from everyone and anyone who may come across this post. Tell me about all the aspects of the profession. Tell me about personal experiences and motives for entering this career field. Just looking for some extra inspiration over here!! Other than that I'm glad to finally be sharing my excitement with others and I look forward to be actively participating on this site :)

Specializes in Critical Care, Capacity/Bed Management.

I started working as a CNA at the age of 15 on an acute care of the elderly unit and hated nursing. I saw nurses and aides continually short staffed with unattainable goals set by management. When I graduated high school I decided to major in pre-med and also found a job in an ICU in a different hospital.

After 3 weeks in the ICU, I came to respect and admire the nursing staff; their devotion and compassion to their patients was incredible. However, I continued my pre-med course work but a piece of me kept thinking about nursing. My senior year of college I dropped out and applied to a local diploma school of nursing and have never been happier. I'll be starting my final semester in September and have only positive things to say about my transition.

I encourage you to get a job in the field, the clinical knowledge will be invaluable as you go through theory and clinical.

Best of Luck
