Starting nursing school as single mom - advice!

Published

Hello, I'm starting the beginning stages of nursing school (prerequisites) in august and am so confused as to how I'm going to do all of this with my 8 year old daughter and working nights at the hospital ..I don't know how many classes I should take at a time. I would like to take a lot so I can get school done and don't have to drag it out for 6 years, but I also haven't been in school for 13 years and am super nervous! I am big on family and don't want to abandon my daughter. I love family time, I don't want to miss out on time with her. Any advice on this helps!

How's your support system? Years ago, my sister was able to complete nursing school as a single mom of two young kids but she had considerable help from our mother. I also don't think she worked during that time. If getting finished as quickly as possible is the goal, consider an ADN program over a BSN if you have such a program local to you. The 2-year programs are great and you can always get your BSN online afterwords if you so choose. Most nurses I've spoken with say the ADN-BSN classes are easy and the schedule is catered toward working nurses so the course load is not bad.
